Steelhead Creek Cleanup @ The Peninsula, 3/28/26

Last Saturday, 22 determined waterway warriors converged on Steelhead Creek, at a location we visited more than a dozen times last fall. What was intended as a dry land mopup after high winter flows quickly turned into a full-blown trash and debris explosion with massive amounts of debris discovered and removed from the main channel.

While the land crews collected heaps of encampment garbage and debris, the water team was busy pulling out shopping carts, 12 tires, several carpets, a lawnmower, generator, chaise lounge, blankets, television, full-size garbage tote, bicycle parts, tents, tarps, textiles and other debris. The haul was large enough to severely overfill our trailer 2 xs, plus Wayne was extremely generous and allowed us to fill his pickup bed with even more. These loads, weighing more than 7,000 lbs combined, were transferred into the dumpsters kindly provided by the City of Sacramento, DCR, saving us from having to make any dump runs.

With each visit, small sections of Steelhead Creek not only "look" transformed, but its main channel is being scoured and cleaned of toxic contaminants and physical barriers, perilous to wildlife and endangered fish species. The full extent of the transformation really cannot be appreciated without an in-person visit. Photos and videos really don't do it justice.
