Steelhead Creek Cleanup @ Del Paso/Main, 8/1/26

On Saturday, 15 of us returned to Steelhead Creek, just downstream from the Del Paso/Main bridge to continue progress in this new project area we started last year. Now that waters have receded, the mop-up of the lower floodplain has commenced, with the main channel also low enough to provide safe entry. Not surprisingly, it was more of the same as we yanked out 2 trailer loads of encampment trash and debris, substantially filling the 2 dumpsters arranged by the City of Sacramento, DCR and hauling off a 1/2 load of metal in our trailer.

We were greeted by a couple of coyote pups who are living in an area previously occupied by an unlawful camp, an area we cleaned earlier this year after the occupants left.

Notable finds included an office chair, a 20 foot section of wire fencing, tarps, a plastic drum, patio chaise, nets, animal traps, a shopping cart, endless clothes, dozens of bags of collected scattered trash and 20 pallets- 2 from the main channel and 18 recently hauled in by someone who apparently planned to build an unlawful structure.

These pallets and other building materials are being illegally removed from the back lot of the Carriage House Door Company through a hole cut in a fence. This Company has reportedly repaired the fence multiple times, but it is re-cut almost immediately. Over the past 10 months, volunteers have removed more than a dozen trailer loads of materials from the creek that were traced directly back to this Company's back lot. Something really needs to give here.

Thank you volunteers for continuing to improve the ecology of this riparian corridor within the City's Walter S. Ueda Parkway, which also benefits downstream neighbors and wildlife habitat for hundreds of miles. Of course, it also opens the channel for endangered Chinook salmon during the winter months. ????????
