Last Thursday was Wayne’s 70th birthday. And for the first time in his 50-plus year professional career, he took his birthday off of work! Instead, he joined us for this fantastic and very much needed cleanup at Steelhead Creek, within the American River Parkway.
We immediately split up into 2 groups. A land group targeted a major mess left by a recently evicted illegal camper, while a water team started cleaning under the Arden-Garden bridge. While the land crew made quick work of their initial project and was able to scour a large area of the floodplain, the water crew wasn’t so fortunate.
Halted by major trash pit discovered on the creek bank, the water team spent the entire event digging out 2 tires, 2 shopping carts, 2 mattresses, a tent, a sleeping bag, a large carpet, multiple textiles and many bags of smaller items from one small 20 foot section.
Thankfully, the land crew arrived just in time to help schlep all the wet, heavy items up the tall, steep slope to the top bank.
It was a terrific day celebrating with Wayne and making another huge dent in the trash that plagues this poor creek. Thank you everyone! ????????
