On Thursday, we were back at Steelhead Creek to tackle more trash and invasive species at the Peninsula.
While the water crew was busy removing primrose & red sesbania in and along the waterline and trash in some marshy areas, the land crew cleared a buried trash pit and removed debris scattered in the bushes and trees.
The primrose was ripped out and hauled up using sleds and Roland’s winch clearing a 30’ swath along a 75’ creek stretch. With a grappling hook on a 60 foot rope, David pulled chunks of primrose from a massive island in the middle of the channel. He eventually made his way out there and removed trash and debris caught underneath the tentacles of vegetation, freeing it and loosening the sediment and sand. We’re still not sure what caused the island to form, perhaps some shopping carts buried deep below.
Once loaded, everything was taken to the dump. It was amazing we did not find a single shopping cart in the water all morning!
We are hoping winter storms will flush out the unnatural muck, sand, and sediment trapped by trash and invasive vegetation, further debilitating the primrose. This is a long term project we are excited to commence!
