???? EMERALD BANDIT – A Deadly Sea Bass Fly | Fly Tying Tutorial
In this video, I’m tying the Emerald Bandit – a slim, flashy and highly mobile baitfish fly designed with Sea Bass in mind. ????
This fly has a great combination of bucktail, flash, chartreuse hackle and emerald Angel Hair, creating a lively baitfish profile that looks fantastic in the water.
The Emerald Bandit is a great pattern for Sea Bass, sea trout and other predatory fish feeding on small baitfish.
If you enjoy saltwater fly fishing and fly tying, this is definitely a pattern worth adding to your fly box!
???? WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
In this step-by-step fly tying tutorial, I’ll show you exactly how I tie the Emerald Bandit, including:
• Building the baitfish profile with bucktail
• Adding flash and chartreuse saddle hackle
• Adding weight with unleaded wire
• Creating the belly with Ice Dub Minnow Belly
• Building the UV Hot Orange body
• Adding the Emerald Angel Hair
• Finishing the fly with eyes and UV resin
???? MATERIALS
Hook: Owner AKI Light, size 1/0
Thread: White Textreme Powerthread
Bucktail: White
Flash: Your choice of flash material
Saddle hackle: Chartreuse
Wire: Unleaded wire
Dubbing: Ice Dub Minnow Belly
Dubbing: Ice Dub UV Hot Orange
Angel Hair: Green / Emerald
Eyes: Your preferred fly-tying eyes
Adhesive: Super glue and UV resin
???? EMERALD BANDIT – STEP-BY-STEP TYING INSTRUCTIONS
1. Start with the hook
Place an Owner AKI Light size 1/0 hook in your vise. Apply a small amount of super glue to the hook shank before starting the thread.
I use white Textreme Powerthread, starting the thread between the barb and the hook point.
2. First bucktail section
Take a small bunch of white bucktail, approximately 8–9 cm (3–3.5") long, and tie it in between the barb and the hook point.
Make sure the bucktail is distributed evenly around the hook shank to create a full, natural baitfish profile. Secure it with a small amount of super glue.
3. Add flash
Take a few strands of flash and tie them in on top of the hook shank.
4. Second bucktail section
Tie in another bunch of white bucktail, making it slightly shorter than the first section.
5. Add the chartreuse saddle hackle
Tie in chartreuse saddle hackle on both sides of the fly.
This adds movement and creates a great contrast in the water.
6. Add the wire
Wrap 5–8 turns of unleaded wire, approximately 3–4 mm behind the hook eye.
Secure the wire with super glue and make several wraps of thread over it to lock everything firmly in place.
7. Add Ice Dub Minnow Belly
Take some Ice Dub Minnow Belly and tie it in so that it is evenly distributed around the hook shank.
Flip the material over and secure it with thread.
8. Add the UV Hot Orange
Cover the remaining hook shank with Ice Dub UV Hot Orange, but leave approximately 1–2 mm of space behind the hook eye.
This space will be used to form the head.
9. Add the Emerald Angel Hair
Tie in a generous bunch of green/Emerald Angel Hair in the area you left open behind the hook eye.
Flip the material over and secure it firmly with thread.
10. Finish the fly
Finish with a whip finish and cut the thread.
11. Add the eyes and finish the head
Glue on the eyes and build a clean, neat head using UV resin.
Cure the resin thoroughly with a UV light.
???? The Emerald Bandit is finished!
A slim, flashy and highly mobile baitfish pattern with a distinctive emerald-green profile – designed to imitate small baitfish and trigger aggressive strikes from Sea Bass.
