In this Fensmere Fish Farm update, we reveal how barley straw is proving highly effective at keeping algae at bay—even during a hot and dry summer. With water quality holding up well, I decided against netting and instead did a few short float fishing sessions to check in on the progress of our C2 carp and to see how many C1s have come through this season.
What I discovered was both exciting and unexpected. Some of the C2s have grown beautifully from just a few ounces to nearly 3lb, but very few C1s are showing up. Even more surprising: I couldn't keep the rod in the water for more than a few seconds without hooking into loads of 6–8” tench! These fish were barely seen last winter, and where they’ve suddenly appeared from is a complete mystery.
To manage the biomass and ensure the carp feed is going where it should, I’ve started removing the tench daily and holding them in my concrete-lined tank. Eventually, they’ll be transferred to my friend Benoît’s fish farm later this winter.
