Lake Michigan salmon fishing was the plan, but this morning out of Port Washington, Wisconsin turned into a multi-species beatdown.

We headed out looking for coho salmon and quickly started dialing in a trolling program with downriggers, lead core, flashers and our own hand-tied flies. Before the morning was over, we had coho in the box, a steelhead, an 11-pound king salmon and the first lake trout ever caught in my boat.

In this video, we break down the trolling spread we’re running, the depths producing fish, how we use waypoints and turns to stay on a school of salmon, and the simple hand-tied flies that kept getting bit.

Sometimes the best thing you can do when you find fish is stop searching and keep working the same productive water.
