The Quietest Islands in Greece and How to Reach Them

Greece has thousands of islands, and a handful of them keep cars out completely. No traffic, no parking, no engine noise. On these car-free Greek islands you get around on foot, by bicycle, by water taxi, or in a horse-drawn carriage.

In this video, Dee from Elxis takes you through five Greek islands where cars are not allowed, and how to reach each one.

Hydra
71 km from Athens, reached by high-speed ferry from Piraeus. Neither cars nor motorcycles are permitted, which is exactly why the island has kept its character. Expect stone mansions rather than the white and blue houses of the rest of the Cyclades.

Telendos
A small island off Kalymnos with no roads at all, reached by ferry from Myrties. Known for its fishing harbour, a shady one-kilometre beach beside the town, and limestone cliffs that European climbers travel here for.

Spetses
Private cars are kept out of the old town and the area around the main harbour, so the streets stay quiet. People walk, cycle, or take one of the horse-drawn carriages near the port. Neoclassical mansions and a central role in the Greek War of Independence.

Kastellorizo
Also known as Megisti, in the southeast Mediterranean. Fly to Rhodes, then continue by ferry. The Castle of the Knights of Saint John, snorkelling, hiking, seafood tavernas, and the Blue Cave that glows blue when the light hits the water.

Trizonia
In central Greece, five minutes by boat from the mainland village of Chania (also spelled Glyfada), about three hours from Athens. Cars and motorcycles stay off the island. A small marina, a few tavernas serving fresh fish, and beaches you can walk to.
