The final pike fishing session of the winter had arrived… and the conditions were brutal.
With ice covering the van, freezing temperatures, and high river levels, I headed out before sunrise for one last deadbaiting trip on the river before the season ends.

The pressure was on — I didn’t want the last pike session of the year to end in a blank.

Fishing sardine and mackerel along drop-offs, reed beds and shallow bays, I waited through hours of silence in the cold wind. Just when it started to feel like the river had completely shut down…

The left-hand rod ripped off.

Was it going to save the final trip of winter… or would the season end quietly?
