The final few days of Week Two of the January Rainbow Lake session were tough. Although the weather was warming there were no signs of fish in 19 and therefore nothing to really go on.

After landing the 45 on Sunday morning after being released from the lodge following the huge Storm Goretti — I felt confident more fish might follow. But for me Rainbow gave very little up this time. No shows. No bubbles. Not a single sign of life in my swim.

I persevered.

All rods went out on bottle rigs, one pushed hard into the back area I’d sworn I wouldn’t fish during Week One, hoping fish might drift through. Another rod went onto a small ledge off the main island — a subtle spot I’d been advised about.

That decision paid off.

The following day, the rod ripped off and after a savage battle, I landed a long, lean 31lb male — an absolute warrior that fought far harder than it weighed.

Around the lake, things remained patchy. Odd fish here and there. Then later that night, Dean Wood lit the place up in Peg 17 with an incredible brace — a 58lb and a 73lb common. Spirits lifted. It felt like the lake might finally switch on.

For me though… that was it.
One unwanted bream on the Friday, and no more carp.

But the story didn’t end there.

On the very last morning, with just 30 minutes to go, Greg Foot — fishing Peg 16 on his first ever Rainbow trip — had a small beep and a gentle drop-back. Expecting a bream, he pulled into it… only to find himself attached to a 61.5lb common carp.

An absolute bruiser.
A first Rainbow fish.
At the end of two brutally hard January weeks.

Massive respect to Greg and Mark for grafting it out in one of the most complex pegs on the lake — that’s proper winter carp angling.

After the session, it was straight back to Fensmere, feeding the fish, checking the farm, and then planning the next move — including pre-baiting my local public barrage once it’s quiet.

Thanks so much for watching, following the journey, and supporting the channel.
