Al Troth's Elk Hair Caddis has stood the test of time because it is simple to tie, easy to modify, and a highly effective fish catcher. The fly was designed by Troth in 1957 for the Green Caddis hatch in Pennsylvania. #dryfly #EHC

You can modify the pattern by changing the dubbing (peacock), hackle, wing color, or size of the fly. Steelhead versions (skaters) can be tied in larger sizes of #6/8. I often use a white wing where I need a higher visibility fly I can easily follow in the water.

Hook: Mustad R50-94840 #12-18
Thread: Tan 6/0
Rib: Fine copper wire
Body: Peacock herl
Hackle: Dry fly hackle (furnace)
Wing: Elk or deer hair
