???? Before we roll down this backroad adventure, hit Like, Subscribe, and turn on notifications for Pruyne Time Adventures! If you enjoy random road trips, small-town history, and discovering places that most people fly right past at 65 mph, you’re in the right place. And when this drive ends, make sure to check out my other channel Pruyne Time Magnet Fishing, where I pull strange and rusty pieces of history straight out of rivers and creeks.
Today’s drive takes us through the hills of the Finger Lakes region, traveling from Burdett, New York to Mecklenburg, New York. Now if you’ve never heard of either town, don’t worry—you’re not alone. That’s kind of the point of drives like this. These little places are scattered all across Schuyler County, and they’ve been quietly doing their thing for more than two centuries while the rest of the world sped past.
We begin in Burdett, a small village founded in the early 1800s and named after Robert Burdett, a local landowner who helped develop the settlement. Burdett sits just west of Watkins Glen and Seneca Lake, meaning it’s surrounded by vineyards, rolling farmland, and some of the most scenic countryside in the Finger Lakes. Today it’s a quiet village where the roads feel slower, the hills feel bigger, and the view somehow makes you forget you were ever in a hurry to begin with.
From there the road climbs and twists through rural Schuyler County toward Mecklenburg, a hamlet with a name that sounds like it belongs on a European map. That’s because it does. The town was named after Mecklenburg, Germany, reflecting the wave of German influence that helped shape parts of New York during the early 19th century. Settlers came here looking for farmland and opportunity, and what they found were hills, forests, and the kind of quiet landscape that hasn’t changed much since.
Driving between these towns feels like discovering the side of New York that most travelers never see. No big city skylines. No massive tourist attractions. Just winding roads, scattered farmhouses, and a reminder that sometimes the best travel moments happen in the places nobody thought to put on a postcard.
???? If you enjoy exploring forgotten backroads, weird little towns, and drives that make you laugh at how random travel can be, make sure to Like, Subscribe, and leave a comment about the smallest town you’ve ever driven through. And don’t forget to check out Pruyne Time Magnet Fishing, where the adventures continue—except instead of roads, we’re digging through rivers for history.
