Black Bear Green Butt

In this video, our volunteer Fabio Malaspina shows you how to tie the "Black Bear Green Butt” Atlantic Salmon fly. According to the Orvis web site “The pattern’s provenance is a bit murky, but several authorities credit Harry Smith of Cherryfield, Maine, for tying the first Black Bear in the 1920s. Smith’s original was all black, and other tiers added the green and the flash over the ensuing decades”. This is a fly that you can swing to target Salmon, steelhead and trout. As most salmon flies, this one doesn’t imitate any insect or bait fish.

Materials list:

Threads: Size 140 denier chartreuse or bright green and 70 or 140 black
Hook: Salmon hook size 2 down to 8. I used an Orvis 1645 size 2. You can tie this fly on a double hook as well.
Ribbing: Small French oval tinsel in silver
Body: Size 140 denier chartreuse or bright green thread/floss and black floss
Collar: Black hackle fibers to match hook size
Throat: Black hackle fibers to match hook size
Wing: Black Possum hair (alternative black Artic fox tail, squirrel, or black bear hair) The original pattern calls for Black Bear hair, but good bear hair is difficult to find.
Skill level: intermediate +
