The Lake Ontario salmon run is starting to wind down, but are Chinook and Coho salmon still in the rivers, and have the first Lake Ontario steelhead started making their way into the tributaries?

Today I head to a Lake Ontario tributary for another salmon run update to see how many Salmon are still around and whether the fall steelhead run has started. With the transition from salmon fishing to steelhead fishing underway in Ontario, it’s an interesting time to be on the river.

I go over my salmon and steelhead fishing setups, including my float fishing setup, beads, rods, reels, line, leader and other gear I use for fishing Lake Ontario tributaries. I also put some salmon lures to the test to find out whether lures can actually get Chinook salmon to bite once they’ve entered the rivers.

The highlight of the trip is hooking into an absolute giant on the float setup a massive 30+ lb Chinook salmon caught on a bead. After an incredible fight, this turned into one of the biggest salmon I’ve encountered during the Lake Ontario salmon run.
