???? Farewell Split Peck | The Sad Reality of Fishery Life at Fensmere

It’s a tough day at Fensmere as we say goodbye to a special resident of the lake — Split Peck. Last seen on the bank a little over a year ago at 59lb when Kevin Ellis caught her one afternoon in March. I found her sitting hardly moving in the shallows early this week and knew her time had come.

Fishery ownership and fish farming, much like any form of livestock farming, is full of highs and lows — and losing a fish like this is one of the hardest parts.

Split Peck was stocked in January 2020 at 32lb, and I always wondered how old she really was. In this video, I take a scale sample to analyze her age and reflect on the process. I also discuss the risks and realities of buying carp in France — something every fishery owner should think carefully about.

This is a heartfelt look at the part of fishery life many don’t see. Rest easy, Split Peck.
