Mother Nature can be a fickle creature at times. As most of you probably know, fishing poses many inherent challenges both human and natural. Conditions can vary, fish locations and abundance, bait, drift, angle, depth, speed etc. On the human side you have crowds, etiquette, your own mind set and attitude just a name a few. Weather is a major factor to consider.
Barometric pressure, cloudy or clear skies, sunny or overcast, rain and snow but the one condition that seems to wreak the most havoc on fishing is wind. Particularly high winds. Winds effect everything from casting, drifts, surface clarity and boat control. Whether fishing with a bait caster, spinning rod or fly rod, wind causes the most problems for anglers. Whether you are bank fishing a lake, or river or jetty. Trolling for Trout, Kokanee or Walleye, or using downriggers on the ocean for Salmon and deep dropping for Ling Cod or Halibut. Wind is your nemesis.
High winds did not get the best of me on the Cowlitz this day although the Steelhead did. It was gusting at 30mph or more and kept most sane people off the river. But there I was, bobber doggin' my cured eggs, soft beads and pulling plugs looking for the infamous Cowlitz River Winter Steelhead to no avail I must add.
