The toughest steelhead conditions I've seen on the Saugeen in the last 5 years. No rain, low and gin-clear water, and most fishermen sitting it out at home. We went anyway — and the river paid off.
Fishing the Saugeen River in Ontario, Canada, with a centerpin and float setup. With water this low and clear, everything came down to a light, subtle presentation: small beads and small roe, long natural drifts, and a lot of patience. Two steelhead landed, and I kept one of the two for the table — the other went back to fight another day.
???? RESPECT THE RIVER
Always leave the river cleaner than you found it. Pack out your line, bait containers and garbage — and if you keep a fish, collect ALL fish remains and take them with you. Don't leave carcasses or guts on the bank or in the water. Know the regulations, keep only what you need, and handle released fish with wet hands and get them back in the water fast.
