January has been a busy month of fishing for me. I've been wrapping up some bigger film projects, so it's been nice to spend less time behind the camera and more time behind the roof chasing winter steelhead.
I've been spending some time helping to film some fundraising content for The Wilderness Calling Conservation Initiative. They are raising money to purchase tags with the hopes of tracking steelhead kelts from Oregon's North Coast in the ocean. Not much is known about where the fish go once they are at sea and this project hopes to answer some of those questions through science and data. For more information please visit: www.thewildernesscalling.org
Some of the people involved with the project are fishing guides based out of the Portland, Oregon fly shop Northwest Fly Fishing Outfitters. Spending time with guides has been valuable to me as an angler, but also helps me to better understand where others are at especially around steelhead fishing and conservation here in the Pacific Northwest.
Matt Thronton is the Executive Director of The Wilderness Calling Conservation Initiative but also runs a guiding operation that can be found here: www.thewildernesscalling.com
I've also gotten to spend more time with Zach Carothers as he has been helping with the project as well. Zach is newer to the guide game and it's been fun to watch how is building his guide business and cultivating relationships within the community. Zach offers many different guided trip options as well as instruction type courses. For more on what that please visit: www.zachcarothers.com
Another thing that has been a lot of fun to me is that I grab a new two-handed rod setup from Red Truck Fly Fishing. I got the 7136 or 13'6" 7wt. This is paired with the Diesel Chrome Spey Fly Reel. This setup has been a lot of fun to get to know better. I've been enjoying the process of dialing it in with the right line and just figuring out its strengths and weaknesses (so far it's been all strengths). Red Truck specialized in well made fly fishing gear that is approachable from a financial point of view. Check them out here: www.redtruckflyfishing.com
PLEASE be sure to check out my website for some sticker options plus much more!
