How to Tie a Glo Bug | The Classic Egg Fly

The Glo Bug is one of the simplest and most recognizable egg flies in fly fishing—and it's the perfect pattern to kick off our new egg fly series.

In this fly tying tutorial, I'll show you two different ways to tie a Glo Bug. We'll start with a smaller version using an egg-tying tool that makes it easy to produce consistent eggs while wasting very little material. Then I'll show you how to tie a larger version completely by hand, without using the tool.

The basic pattern couldn't be much simpler. We're using McFly Foam for the egg, with a small contrasting hot spot in the center. Once the material is secured and trimmed, rolling the fly between your hands creates that round egg profile.

And yes...we're also going to talk about the elephant in the room:
Egg flies.

Some fly fishermen love them. Some absolutely refuse to fish them.

I don't fish egg patterns all the time, but under the right circumstances they're absolutely part of my fly box. During spawning periods, eggs are a natural food source available to trout.

To me, choosing an egg pattern when fish are actively feeding on eggs isn't all that different from choosing a mayfly during a hatch or a streamer when trout are feeding on baitfish.

I'll even show you a beautiful brown trout I caught on an egg pattern while fishing during a salmon spawn.

This is Part 1 of our new Egg Fly Series. Over the next several weeks, we'll fill a fly box with different egg patterns and look at what makes each one a little different.

Next week we'll take this basic concept and tie the Nuke Egg. It uses a translucent veil around the egg that creates a completely different appearance once the fly gets wet.
