Hoonah, Alaska sits on Chichagof Island in Southeast Alaska — one of the most remote inhabited places in the United States, and home to one of the highest concentrations of brown bears on the planet. We came for steelhead.
Guide Natalie Vaz of NatVenture Tours (Icy Strait Point, AK) took us deep into the Tongass on a glacial river that has been producing fish like this since before anyone was counting. The steelhead that came to the fly that morning measured 30 inches. I've fly fished for most of my adult life — Vermont, New Hampshire, North Carolina. I've never fought a fish like this one.
