Ice fishing Milwaukee Harbor during an extreme cold front turned into one of the toughest trips of the season. With wind chills between -20 and -30 degrees, just keeping lines in the water was a challenge.
Inside the shanty with the heater we stayed pretty comfortable, but the outside lines on our automatic fishermen & jaw jacker kept freezing over. We had to chip ice out of the holes and occasionally re-drill them just to keep fishing in the brutal conditions.
The bite was extremely slow, but we still managed to land a steelhead and a sucker on day one. The Wisconsin DNR also stopped by to check licenses, which gave a realistic look at what a normal day on the harbor can be like.
Day two was even slower. After my cousin Justin and my buddy Jack headed out, I finally hooked into the only steelhead I caught that day, making the grind completely worth it.
Sometimes Great Lakes ice fishing isn’t about constant action, it’s about being out there and embracing the challenge.
Tight lines! ????✌️
