The Eel River starts on the southern side of Bald Mountain in California's Mendocino National Forest and ends at the Pacific Ocean near Humboldt Bay, flowing approximately 200 miles through Lake, Mendocino, and Humboldt counties. The main stem of the river flows through Lake Pillsbury and later merges with its North Fork, Middle Fork, and South Fork tributaries before its final journey to the ocean.
From Friends of the Eel River: The Eel River has both State (1972) and Federal (1981) Wild and Scenic River designations, which protect more than 350 miles of its waterways from additional damming and ensure that environmental concerns rank at least equally with development and industry.
