Opening day for Pike fishing on the legendary Rideau Canal is finally here, and Fishing Kook is back on the water for the first fishing trip of 2026! ????????????

Conditions actually looked pretty dreamy at first. Morning water was calm, glassy, and peaceful enough to make you forget you’re casting into 51-degree liquid ice cubes. Air temperatures stayed in the low 60s with slightly overcast skies and just enough breeze to keep things comfortable. By early afternoon though, the canal decided to wake up and turn into a windy washing machine with choppy water everywhere.

The fish? Yeah… they apparently missed the memo that Pike season opened.

After hours of casting, searching weed lines, and trying every “guaranteed” lure in the tackle box, I managed one lonely bass and a Pike follow that looked interested for about three seconds before ghosting me harder than an unpaid fishing sponsor.

Cold water fishing this early in the season is never easy. The fish are still sluggish, spread out, and definitely not in full feeding mode yet. But honestly, after a long Canadian winter, just getting back on the water felt like a victory.

Nothing beats that first trip of the year: cold hands, tangled lines, mystery follows, and pure optimism on every cast.
