This is a short tutorial for beginners fishing for American Shad at Bonneville Dam. I will outline what works for me.
EQUIPMENT
Rod: Medium 9'6" salmon/steelhead spinnging rod.
Reel: 30/300/3000 series spinning reel
Main line: 10-12lb high visible mono
Leader line: 10-12lb mono
Lure: 1/16th oz shad dart
SETUP - use a Carolina rig
Have at least 20 of these for a full fishing day
From the mainline:
- add a 1/2 - 3/4 oz egg sinker
- add a small bead
- tie on a #7 snap swivel
Leader:
- cut a 4' length of line
- tie a "non-slip mono knot" to the shad dart (don't use a different knot)
- tie a perfection loop to the other end
