Everything in this Boa Vista guide is somewhere I'd get in the truck and drive out for, ranked strongest first, with the parts I'd skip and the ones worth spending on. Because that's the catch with this island.

It's a flat, dry, desert place, and the best of it sits a bumpy four wheel drive ride out from the resort, which is exactly why so many people fly home calling it pleasant but a bit boring. They only ever saw the pool.

If you're working out the real things to do in Boa Vista, Cape Verde, here's what the video covers. It opens on the Cabo Santa Maria, the rusted Spanish shipwreck standing in the surf up on the north coast, then the white Sahara dunes of the Viana Desert, and Praia de Santa Monica, an empty beach that runs for miles and landed on a Travel and Leisure list of the most beautiful in the world.
