The 2026 open water fishing season is finally here in Southern Alberta, and what better way to kick things off than chasing Northern Pike on Lake Newell! In this episode of Angling Spiders, I head to one of Alberta’s most well-known trophy pike and walleye lakes for my very first open-water trip on Lake Newell.

Using my inflatable kayak equipped with a trolling motor, I travel across the lake searching for shallow bays, weed beds, and aggressive spring pike. The day started slow with missed strikes and changing conditions, but once the fish were found, the action turned on fast!

Lake Newell can be an incredible fishery when conditions line up, but as always in Alberta, the wind had other plans! Even with tough conditions later in the day, the season opener turned into an unforgettable start to the year.
