It's the Global Big Day of Birding and we're kicking off part one of this two part series at RSPB Minsmere (UK).

Up at silly o’clock and heading to RSPB Minsmere with my son for our first real Global Big Day. Before we start properly, I lay out our rules: we’ll log everything in the Birda app, we won’t get video of every bird, we’ll only count birds we actually see (not just hear), and we’ll count a species if either of us can positively ID it.

We already picked up several birds on the drive, and get to Minsmere just before 8am. We head straight to Bittern Hide and then the Island Mere Hide to cover as much ground and as many habitats as possible right out of the gate.

Along the way we add species like black-headed and common gull, song thrush, blackcap, goldcrest, and long-tailed tit. And then the Island Mere delivers with marsh harrier, booming bitterns, a common crane fly-by, and our first bearded tit of the day before we head toward the coast to continue…

What else will we see…?!!!
