I join a former NZ Fly Fishing team mate of mine Tim Anderson for a mid winter stillwater hit out on Lake Aniwhenua. While I don't chase the competition circuit anymore, I still love my stillwater fishing, and it offers me a chance to mix up my fishing experiences with something other than the typical Taupo spawning runs during the NZ winter.. Tim was wanting to practice for an upcoming competition, so I seized the opportunity to join him to test out a few new pieces of kit I've changed to and have been working on in the INTOUCH LAB.. namely swapping all my lake lines and reels/spools over to the Guideline Nova Cassette reel system. And tying a few new flies made from a new material from Fasna Fly Fishing in Europe, the HALO/MOSAIC/ Straggles.. As a whole NZ anglers are pretty slow to adopt new materials and we often go decades plugging away on our tried and proven patterns and techniques, and YES they still work, but there are many other introductions in the flyfishing world, especially from Europe that we shy away from. So I thought I'd tie a bunch of flies and put them up against those tried and proven patterns I know already work, test the waters as such, and see if there was any definitive answers from my catch data. I was very surprised!
