TRAVEL, BE PREPARED FOR CHANGES - 2020 and into 2021,once the threat of the pandemic has subsided, and our health/financial stats start to improve, thoughts of travel will start to emerge again.
But will it be the same as the pre-COVID 19 days? Chances are NO. Well not in the way that we were used to it before. And really if you think about it, changes to the travel industry needed to happen.
Airlines - Most of the airline companies have had to park their fleets, due to government mandates and also lack of demand. Their is virtually no international flights anywhere in the world and minimal national flights are taking place. For those flights that are still in operation, they are flying virtually empty. Planes cannot be parked at the airports. One because of space, but also because a plane that is not in operation needs to be kept in a dry and warm environment, therefore most of the planes are parked out in the dessert. Here they will either be kept for the short term, which requires heavy, on-going maintenance and is very expensive. Or they are parked for the longer-term, which basically means these planes will be taken out of service, for an extended, undetermined amount of time. In order to get these planes back in circulation again, is a slow transition and therefore could take months and upwards of 2-3 years before a fleet is back to it's pre-pandemic schedule. This will be a huge adjustment for the traveller, with fewer flights to choose from and potentially an increase in the ticket price.
Airlines are also going to have to make allowance for a longer turnover time between flights, to give the cleaning staff more time to fumigate and deep clean the plane. Longer times, means less flights, less flights means less travel or the need for more planes.
Cruises - have taken a hard hit as far as a travel alternative. With so much bad press around stranded cruises and basically being described as floating petri dishes, it is going to take a lot for cruise-lines to gain the trust of the traveler again.
Travellers - there will be some who will need to start travelling almost immediately either for business, family affairs or those who can afford to travel, as travel becomes a luxury commodity, again.
But most of the public is going to be very wary of being to far away from home. The fear of the pandemic will still be too fresh, but also the thought of being stranded somewhere in case there is a resurgence of the virus again. A very likely episode as described by many of the respected scientist and medical teams out there.
Economy - combine the travelers apprehension to travel with their financial ability is not good recipe for the travel industry going forward. Many people and businesses have been directly affected by the shutdown and the social distancing policies that have been put in place throughout the world. This has led to savings being depleted and financial obligations, that were deferred, having to be paid back.
Travel Insurance - we have already seen the changes to the policy wording that the insurance companies have put in place regarding trip cancellations that are a direct result of COVID or any future pandemic outbreak, not being covered. And this is only the beginning of some of the changes that will be taking place in the near future. For instance we will probably see that the "cancel for any reason" policies will disappear. Overall, a traveller will need to take on more risk when taking out that Emergency health or trip cancellation policy, and potentially at a higher premium. Leaving the traveller just a little more skeptical of traveling in the future.
We have been given a wake up call, kind of like a reset button has been turned on. Travel as we have known it, is going to change. It will not be the same as the Pre-pandemic days.
