Across the fly nation, there are small pockets of like minded anglers who on occasion get together to share a cup of coffee, tie some flies and talk about past triumphs. It is the shared love of fishing and the outdoors that brings Anglers from varied backgrounds together. It’s these gatherings that cement the friendships and bonds that last a lifetime. The Totem Flyfishers of British Columbia have been meeting now for over 50 years and to honor the milestone they have put together a collection of fly patterns collected from the group and touch on the history of the group.

One great feature of this book is the inclusion of the club history, something that can easily be lost to time. The Totem Flyfishers present awards from time to time when the opportunity presents itself and the list of awards and winners can be found here. One of the awards to note is The Tarnished Totem Award which may be presented in good humor when a member makes a notable gaffe that gets noticed. There is also a roster of past and present members included as well as letters from honorary member Roderick Haig-Brown.

The bulk of the book is dedicated to a collection of flies that were originated or popularized by members or those that are commonly found in members fly boxes. Each of the 50 patterns includes images of the flies, a recipe, and background information. There are quite a few essential BC flies included in the list for both salmon and trout including the Steelhead Bee, Tom Thumb, Rolled Muddler, Mikulak Sedge, and General practitioner to name a few. But it’s pattern #40, The Outhouse 80 the I really enjoyed the origins of.

I enjoyed reading about the history of the club and going through the patterns collected by the club. Anyone who has an interest in the history or has an affection for interesting stories surrounding the flies they fish should have a copy of this book in their library.

The book was produced in a small run of just 150 copies. If you are interested in getting a copy, contact Art Lingren via Facebook.
