This hidden Southern California creek is home to some seriously HUGE fish, and most people walk right past it without knowing. In this video I hike into a small, crystal-clear creek with my fly rod to sight fish for giant common carp, and the results were way better than I expected. ????

???? About Common Carp in California
Common carp aren’t native to California. They were brought over from Europe in the late 1800s and have since spread into rivers, lakes, and creeks across the state. Carp can live more than 20 years and grow over 30 pounds, which is why even a tiny creek can hold fish this big. They’re known as one of the smartest and spookiest freshwater fish to catch on a fly, which is why fly anglers call them the “freshwater bonefish.”
???? Tips for Sight Fishing Carp on the Fly
Move slowly and stay low. Carp can feel vibrations through the ground and water and will spook fast.
Wear polarized sunglasses so you can see fish through the glare.
Look for feeding fish. Carp that are tipped down with their tails up or kicking up mud are actively feeding and the most likely to eat.
Use small, natural flies like nymphs or crayfish patterns in sizes 8–12.
Cast past the fish and drag the fly into its path. Landing the fly right on its head will usually scare it off.
Be patient on the hookset. Wait until you see the fish tip down or its mouth move before setting the hook.
???? To protect this creek and the fish living in it, I’m keeping the exact location private. Please practice catch and release and leave no trace!
???? Comment below: Have you ever caught a carp on a fly? And what’s the biggest fish you’ve seen in a small creek?
I’m just trying to spend as much of my life outside as possible.
Comment where I should go next.
