When two dams sealed off Washington's Elwha River in 1913, ocean-going steelhead were trapped above the concrete and slowly shrank into landlocked trout that never saw the sea. Biologists assumed the migratory instinct was gone forever. Then the dams came down — and the descendants of those trapped trout turned back into steelhead and swam to the Pacific.
This is the story of the genetic vault: how a NOAA study of 1,200+ samples proved the wild code survived intact, how Pacific lamprey (older than dinosaurs) recolonized 12-fold in three years, and how century-old mussels still wait for the salmon that will let them breed again.
