The Fish of 1,000 Casts — How many casts did it take to catch my first Steelhead??? | Chilliwack, BC

By the end of the 2022 Fall Salmon Season, I realized I had come a long way as an angler. It was my second year fishing for salmon in British Columbia's coastal streams, and I didn't want the fun to end. I decided to bite the bullet and commit to pounding the bank for Winter Steelhead that year (2022-2023).

This is also the time I decided to begin documenting my time on the water, and the experience of working so hard for this fish ended up inspiring the name of my channel.

Steelhead are highly prized as sport fish in the Pacific North West. They have a similar life cycle to other anadromous salmonid species, but they return in much lower numbers than our Salmon species. Their elusiveness has earned them a nickname — the fish of 1,000 casts.

I only caught one Steelhead that entire season, but it was worth every minute of effort, every drop of sweat, and every cold morning, just to see that float drop and feel the fish making those runs.

This month I will be making some more attempts for Steelhead - make sure you're subscribed so you don't miss anything!
