Spring steelhead fishing in the tributaries of Western New York offers anglers an exceptional experience. We're lucky to live in steelhead alley where we can explores prime fishing spots, try a bunch of different techniques, and fish a bunch of great water looking for the best spring steelhead fishing.
To maximize your chances of success steelhead fishing its a good idea to try a few different techniques:
Marabou Jig Fishing: Use marabou jigs to attract steelhead, especially during the spring months. Marabou jigs imitate baitfish and can be really effective in the spring.
Nymphing: Use nymph patterns to mimic the natural diet of steelhead, particularly during early spring when they are more likely to feed on the bottom. Warming temperatures activate bug life in many of our tributaries making these baits a great choice. You can dead drift them on a float fishing setup.
Egg Patterns: Imitate the eggs of other fish species with egg patterns, a favorite food of steelhead during spawning season. Sucker spawn can be really effective in the spring when the suckers enter the creeks and join the steelhead.
Spring is a great time for steelhead fishing in Western New York, with peak runs typically occurring in March and April. During this period, both fresh-run and post-spawn ("drop-back") steelhead are in the local tributaries providing some great fishing opportunities.
