Spring steelhead season has officially begun in Michigan! In this video we hit the Muskegon River with our friend River Recon to chase our first chrome of the spring run.
After launching from Thornapple and running upriver toward Croton Dam, we found near perfect early season conditions. Recent rain and snowmelt had the river up slightly, and the water carried that classic green stain that often gets spring steelhead moving.
Along the way we were stopped by the Michigan DNR for a routine safety check where we learned an interesting fact about inflatable life jackets — they only count as a legal PFD if you're actually wearing them while on the boat.
After the check we continued pushing upriver, drifting new water and searching for fish. It wasn’t a numbers day, but we eventually connected with a couple beautiful chrome steelhead that made the grind completely worth it.
River Recon also shares some of the incredible work he is doing helping veterans navigate the VA system and his vision for creating a fishing community for veterans.
Early spring steelhead fishing on Michigan rivers can test your patience, but all it takes is one bite to make the whole day unforgettable.
