The Angling Trust Winter League needs no introduction, spanning back many years, it’s the pinnacle of most match anglers winter calander.

Qualifying for the final is done so by winning the Geographical area ‘mini league’ which features some of the best teams in the country such as the formidable Barnsley Blacks, Starlets and Dorking to name just a few. The top teams from each league then competes against each other in the final which is split between 5 sections on the Cambridge drains and 5 sections at the famous Decoy Lakes.

Winning your section in any round of a winter league is a great achievement in itself, but imagine winning your section in all 6 rounds and finishing on a perfect 6 point score! Well that’s exactly what Drennan’s Steve Winter did in the East Midlands Winter League, we think this is a first ever for the area! Earning his name a place on the prestigious Stacey Cup.

We caught up with Steve on the banks of the Old Nene and Benwick to share some of the tactics he used to individually win the league and help his team qualify for the final in February.
