One night in January, 1700, the coast here shook, and the ocean came in. Everybody at Siletz Bay knows it'll happen again. They live here anyway.

A slow walk around the bay at Taft, on the south end of Lincoln City, Oregon: the tsunami marker, the houses on the spit, a mermaid, two crows, the salmon fishermen at the river mouth, and a beach made almost entirely of driftwood.

The Siletz River runs Chinook, coho and steelhead, and harbor seals follow them miles upriver. The floating logs you'll see upstream are near where they filmed Ken Kesey's Sometimes a Great Notion. Taft itself was named, I'm told, for President Taft.

Where do you go when you need to get quiet? Tell me in the comments.

Now you know... before you get here.
