ROAD TRIP #466: Route 3 North Near Pulaski, NY: Lake Ontario Is Hiding Just Beyond the Trees #

Why take Route 3 north from the outskirts of Pulaski, New York? Because even when you can't see Lake Ontario, you know it's there. Today on Pruyne Time Adventures, we're heading north on New York Route 3, with one of the Great Lakes sitting just a little to our left. Trees, fields, and side roads keep Lake Ontario hidden, but one quick turn west could suddenly put us on its shoreline. Adding to the atmosphere, Canadian wildfire smoke has drifted into Northern New York, softening the summer sky with a slight haze. It's just enough to make an already mysterious drive feel a little more adventurous.

We're starting near Pulaski, a community closely connected to the Salmon River and Lake Ontario. The surrounding region developed through agriculture, lumber, transportation, and trade, while today Pulaski is famous among anglers as a gateway to outstanding salmon and steelhead fishing. The Salmon River eventually reaches Lake Ontario near Port Ontario, connecting this small inland community to one of the largest freshwater systems on Earth.

Then there's Route 3. Heading north, we're tantalizingly close to Lake Ontario without necessarily seeing it. It's behind those trees, beyond that field, down one of those roads—always just off to our left. You start looking at every intersection differently. What happens if we turn there? Maybe nothing. Maybe somebody's driveway. Or maybe the trees suddenly disappear and you're staring across a Great Lake that looks suspiciously like somebody misplaced an ocean.

The faint Canadian wildfire haze adds another layer to the scenery. Fires burning hundreds of miles away can send smoke south across the border and into New York, muting distant views and giving the sky that washed-out appearance. It's not the main story of this drive, but it's there—another reminder that what happens far beyond the horizon can change what we see through our windshield.

That's what makes this stretch of Northern New York fascinating. The biggest feature in the landscape is the one we're barely seeing. Lake Ontario quietly follows beside us as Route 3 carries us north, waiting for the right turn or opening in the trees to reveal itself.

That's Pruyne Time Adventures. Sometimes we find the destination. Sometimes we find the history. And sometimes the fun is simply knowing something enormous is hiding just beyond those trees.
