These are the fifteen things to do in Placencia that actually earned a spot, ranked the way I would do them, with the whale sharks demoted to where they belong and an honest word about the beach before you book anything.

Here is the short version. Placencia is a thin sandy peninsula at the bottom of Belize, and the mistake most people make is treating it as a beach town. It is really a base. It is the one place in the country where the reef and the jungle both sit a short hop away, no island flight required, so the smart move is to rent a car and own the day trips.

On the water, the standout is Silk Caye, a scrap of white sand and palms where you snorkel with loggerhead turtles and rays, along with Laughing Bird Caye, the UNESCO reef island next to it. The famous whale sharks at Gladden Spit have all but vanished, so I would dive the reef or go hunt lionfish instead. In the village you walk the four-foot-wide sidewalk, eat far too well at Rumfish and the local salbutes windows, and take the slow mornings out on the pier. Then you drive: Monkey River for howler monkeys and manatees, the Cockscomb Basin jaguar preserve, a bean-to-bar chocolate farm run by an anthropologist, the Lubaantun and Nim Li Punit Maya ruins, the longest zipline in Central America at Bocawina, and friendly Hopkins an hour up the coast.

Come in the drier winter months for your best shot at clean sand, give the peninsula four or five days, and base right in the village so the boats and the drives both start at your door. A lot of the best of it costs very little.
