Pablo Escobar's Cocaine Hippos: Plague or Ice Age Ghosts?

QPablo Escobar died in 1993. His hippos stayed. Four animals have become almost 200 – the only wild hippos outside Africa. In April 2026 Colombia decided to kill 80 of them. Three months later the plan was called off.

Are Escobar's cocaine hippos a plague that poisons lakes and endangers people? Or are they filling a gap left by the giant animals of the last Ice Age? We look at the studies, the numbers and the political fight – and give an honest answer.
