Welcome back to Fishing with Steve ????
In this episode, I’m doing something completely new for the channel — my first-ever overnight pike fishing session, committing to 36 hours on the bank on a wild Irish lake in Monaghan.
I arrive just after midday and get straight into it, fishing two rods across a deep drop-off. One rod is positioned in deep water at over 30ft, while the other is placed right on the edge of a sharp shelf, hoping to intercept any cruising pike. Deadbaits include eel, roach, and oversized smelt, with constant adjustments made throughout the session as conditions change.
As the session unfolds, I take you through:
???? Rod placement and bait choices
???? Fishing deep water, drop-offs, and margins
????️ A full overnight bivvy setup, including bed, cook station, power packs, and lighting
???? Running a diesel heater safely for winter sessions
???? Cooking proper food on the bank
❄️ Dealing with bitter cold, wind, and tough January conditions
???? Adjusting tactics when the fish aren’t playing ball
Despite marking fish on the sounder and trying multiple approaches — moving baits, changing depths, float fishing, popped-up deadbaits — the pike prove extremely difficult, showing just how challenging winter pike fishing can be on big waters.
