Your jig of choice- I tied this one on a VMC. This hair jig can be tied larger or smaller. Tie it on a stout hook it works well for steelhead and salmon. Tied on a stainless hook it works it in the saltwater.
Materials are getting expensive I think it’s important to use your materials as effectively as possible. You want to spend your time on trips not materials, right?!
Tail- I like ripple ice fibers or rubber legs. Fox, hackle, marabou or no tail works great.
Body- All marble fox it’s much cheaper than arctic fox and works basically the same way. Also buying full tails from fur trappers is a great way to have lots of materials for also cheap.
The belly should be shorter and a little less dense than the overwing or top wing when the jig is oriented when it’s being fished.
Grizzly hackle down each side makes great lateral lines or an overwing of peacock really classes up the jig but I want this jig to be quick and cheap so I don’t really care when I lose it. If you are fishing it were it needs to be you will lose it.
Thread of your choice, Veevus is awesome.
This jig is heavily influenced by the Clouser Minnow a fly pattern that has been around for a long time and still crushes fish. Also Nick Simon the owner of Superior Outfitters is a big fan of flies and jigs like this- his results speaks for themselves.
