I love how much the conditions, many of which are out of our control, affect our pursuit of steelhead on the swung fly. Some of us choose this method because it's challenging but it's that challenge that makes the reward that much sweeter.

I recently got out with Matt Hollenbeck and his dog Archie for a nice day trip on a popular stretch of one of our local rivers. While we were planning the trip, we were discussing how we would try out some new (to me) tactics to see if we could find some fish in these less than ideal conditions. When the river is low and clear, winter steelhead tend to be found in different water than where we typically go looking for them, so we sought new runs, buckets and spots that looked "fishy".

There's a lot that could be covered on just that subject alone, but I'm no expert and mostly just recycling what I've read or what people with way more experience than me have told me, so I'll just leave it there. Needless to say, getting out with friends and honing your skills is never a bad time. At least for me it's not. Catching fish makes it a little better, but I'll always jump at the chance to get out of the house!
