On 28 August 2026, two Greek F-16s scrambled after a drone Greece says was Turkish flew toward Alexandroupolis airport. A Greek military source called it not serious. That calm was earned over three decades above the Aegean.

The story runs from the 8 October 1996 Chios shootdown, generally described as the only confirmed air-to-air kill between the two air forces, to the 2020 cockpit-video war, more than 10,000 Turkish airspace violations in 2022, and the 23 May 2006 Karpathos collision that killed Captain Kostas Iliakis. Along the way: Greece’s F-16 Viper upgrades, Rafales, F-35 order and Red Flag reputation.
