What is the dating scene like for expat women over 45 in Asia? Fish in a barrel or mission impossible? #genx #expatlife #dating #asia #expatasia #greynomads #singlewhiteexpat #crossculturalrelationships #thailand
Hi, my name is Wendy and I have been an expatriate- also known as an expat- in Asia for more than 3 decades. Since 1988, I have lived and worked in Singapore, Macau, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand. During that time I was married, raised some '3rd culture kids' and became a divorcee. I now fly solo as a GenX solo women and I still live and work in Asia, in fact, I have now been in Thailand for over 10 years. The place I lived the longest was Hong Kong, for a total of 16 years! In my time as a female expat I have met hundreds, maybe even thousands, of amazing expat women. Some were single, some in partnerships, some with full-time jobs, some digital nomads, some seeking a higher calling, or running from 'real life' some retirees, but all with a story to tell. The thing I found, though, as social media blossomed, was that the stories on places like YouTube or Instagram tended to centre around expat men. Often they were videos about how to deal with their girlfriend's Chinese family, or where to buy the best fish and chips in Hanoi, or to complain about the cost of beer in a Thai girly bar or Wan Chi. What I wanted to hear were the stories from women like me who have learned to love being independent, living inside a vibrant expat community and far from home. I wanted to see the issues we face being discussed. I wanted to answer questions about 'what are the things from home that you can't live without' or 'is it safe to live alone as a silver-haired solo lady in a place like Chiang Mai'. Did you know what an issue it can be getting a decent bra in a place like Shanghai? Wanna hear a funny story about that? Do you have a crazy 'bra story of your own? Welcome into our tent. I wanted the stories of old-school expatriate life to be recorded. The 'days back when' stories. Before the internet but after they invented the plane. In my time, I have been lucky enough to meet women who went with their 'bread winner husband' to Egypt with 2 blonde hair blue eyed Aussie kiddos in the 70s and somehow managed to keep everyone safe and well and thriving! I, myself, lived in Macau when there was 1 small casino and the rest was fishing village! My first trip to China was in 1990...and, MAN, has THAT PLACE changed. So many amazing tales, but so little representation. Well. That has to change. And here we are. Of course, my experiences are in Asia, but these stories, these amazing expat women, have lived, and still live, all over the World. Expat communities exist in South America, Southern Europe, and almost every part of the globe. So, if you are a female expat, get in touch. Let's learn from each other and share our stories and, if you want to know more about the lifestyle of an over 50 female expat, or in fact, women out there living their best lives, send a message in the comments or ask some questions and help get the message out there, because it's not all about discovering the girl you took home was a ladyboy, it's also about rediscovering the thrill of the unknown on a thousand different levels. The good, the bad, the weird and the charming. The life we choose for ourselves. I hope you enjoy this crazy adventure as much as I do.
