Every Level of Trout Angler Explained

Level 1 fishes a stocked pond with PowerBait. Level 7 walks onto an unfamiliar river in Patagonia and reads it in one morning.

Level 1 — PowerBait Angler: the stocked rainbow has slightly rounded fins from rubbing against the concrete raceway. Level 1 hasn't noticed yet
Level 2 — Spin Fisherman: an inline spinner can trigger a strike from a brown trout locked into a hatch that would refuse every other presentation. Reflex is independent of feeding mode
Level 3 — Wild Trout Hunter: a wild brook trout in a native Virginia headwater stream is a biological indicator that the water quality standard that stream is supposed to meet — is actually being met
Level 4 — Hatch Chaser: Trico spinner falls in August. Size 22 fly. 7X tippet. Tied on in the pre-dawn dark. The hatch calendar is planned as carefully as any other recurring event of the year
Level 5 — Technical Nympher: trout feed on the surface during hatches — which last hours. They feed subsurface the rest of the time — which lasts months. Level 5 fishes both windows
Level 6 — Spring Creek Specialist: 10-foot rod for the downstream reach. 15-foot leader. Size 22 fly. The first cast must be the best cast. Not a refinement of the standard approach — a specific solution to a specific problem
Level 7 — Destination Angler: Patagonia in April — the brown trout are lake-run, responding to southern hemisphere autumn temperatures. The same biological trigger as a steelhead in the Pacific Northwest — on an opposite calendar
