Columbia River Hover Fishing for Salmon

During late Summer and Fall Chinook (King) salmon make the journey back to their natal spawning grounds to "hook-up" and spawn. Some will swim an amazing 1,000 miles without food to make the trip. Historically "June Hogs" would swim all the way to the Canadian Rockies and could tip the scale at close to 100 pounds. Sadly that run of salmon is no longer with us due to impassable man-made dams.

Hover fishing is pretty simple. You hang a light weight with a leader over the side of your boat (2-3 oz round lead ball) and a short leader with salmon eggs and a sand shrimp for bait. Drop it to the bottom and reel up 2 full cranks. Make sure you are not directly on the bottom as sturgeon are present in most places and they love to snack on your bait. Always try to keep your lines vertical to the bottom so you know where your presentation is located. It's also not a bad idea to drop to the bottom on occasion and make your two reel revolutions to be sure you are close to the bottom incase the depth changes.

Catching salmon with this method is great fun using light tackle. Many fisherman that hover fish use their light-weight steelhead rods/reels with heavier braided line for the job.
