Camera Fishing During Carp Spawning | The Netherlands’ Wild Canal Carp Revealed, grass carp and the common European carp and more fish up-close and personal. Some wild action in this fishing video, not done with a rod and reel but with my cameras in the Dutch wilds!

Experience the raw beauty of carp spawning season in The Netherlands as giant grass carp and common carp (also known as European carp) take over the shallow waters and canal banks! Normally bottom dwellers, these fish rise to the surface in spring to spawn, and I was lucky enough to catch some action-packed wildlife moments on camera.

Filmed during several days of “camera fishing,” this rare footage shows large female carp being chased or better said, flanked by smaller males. Intense splashing sounds like people diving into the water, and even fish sliding along the edges of the canal banks at my feet. Watch as these powerful and massive fish, some truly mammoth in size, perform their ancient spawning ritual. All part of God’s plan.

Both grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) and common carp (Cyprinus carpio) are widely found in Dutch freshwater systems, including canals, lakes, and rivers. Although fishing for carp is a popular sport here, spawning season is a time to observe and respect their natural behavior, not to mention they don’t bite when mating, called spawning for fish, is in progress! This footage highlights the importance of pond and canal ecology and fish reproduction in the Dutch aquatic environment. As you see, the water gets pretty murky as these large, strong fish dart around.
