Although there is a clear need to tackle toxic spills into rivers, could an important lifeline for fish to escape and re-populate be created by removing dams?

Human-made barriers to migration (whether you call them weirs or dams) also create many other issues - but there is a common argument that there is no point tackling these structures since our rivers are full of sewage anyway.
Here I go in search of wild trout in an area where pollution previously wiped them out. The reason I am hopeful is that a weir removal project on Skelmersdale's River Tawd has opened up a potential route for natural recolonisation by fish from the wider river Douglas system.
