Can you use a meat thermometer to check river water temperature for fishing? We put a Fishpond river thermometer and a meat thermometer side by side to see how their readings compare.

In this Skunk’d Outdoors gear test, we compare five water temperature readings and break down the difference between a dedicated fishing thermometer and something you might already have in your kitchen.

Across our five comparisons, the meat thermometer read between 0.9°F and 1.1°F lower than the Fishpond, with an average difference of 0.98°F. That’s a consistent gap in this test, but matching readings and proven accuracy aren’t the same thing.
